Shark fishing off the southern Irish coast comes into its own during the summer months as the species arrive in numbers along the gulf stream, and boat anglers intrepid enough to target them have been filling their boots of late.
One charter boat that knows where the hot spots are is the Ocean Ranger, out of Kinsale. The skipper, Mick Walsh, and his crew latched into 13 ‘blueys’ in one session, managing to boat ten of them. The biggest was estimated at a very impressive 140lb.
Another Kinsale skipper, Butch Roberts, has also been getting in on the action too, tagging and releasing a 60lb fish taken by a party of Dutch anglers at a mark about six miles out from the old head of Kinsale.
