Having received a tip-off a few years ago about a Midlands stillwater that held some big rudd, Nigel Kennard decided to have a go for them this spring.
Arriving at the water for a 48-hour session, he began by Spombing out a mixture of hemp, casters and groundbait to a clear spot at 40 yards, over which he cast his maggot feeders.
These were set up heli style, using 3in hooklinks and double red maggot hookbaits, popped up using a bit of red foam.
Nigel only had to wait a couple of hours for his first bite, which was from a 2lb 4oz rudd. He then got the result he’d been dreaming of when the next fish he caught turned out to be the longed-for three-pounder.
It’s a rudd that Nigel was understandably really delighted with, but the action didn’t stop there. Come the end of the session, he had banked six rudd over 2lb, which meant that he made the long drive back to his home in Dorset with a big smile on his face!
