As an angler, there is nothing quite like watching your kids take to fishing and enjoy it as much as you do. Not only does it create a new fishing buddy, but it also allows you to create timeless memories on the bank together like few others sports can.
While many of us start off catching a few small fish like roach and perch, six-year-old Ellis Mason managed to catch the biggest carp in the lake while fishing with his dad James this weekend.
“Me and my son, Ellis, recently went for a week’s fishing at a reservoir where carp were our target.
“We didn’t have a beep on the alarms for the first few days, but eventually we managed a few runs between us, and Ellis landed a 22lb common.
“The next day, I was Spombing a bit of bait out when Ellis had a take and lifted into what was clearly a good fish.
“Over the next 15 minutes he played it expertly while I gave him a little guidance, and when I eventually netted it, I knew it could be pushing the 30lb mark.
“My good friend, Alan, who runs the water, was there at the time and recognised the fish as the ‘Angry Common’ – one of the lake’s big girls.
“It weighed 40lb exactly and is a fish that smashed my PB. Ellis was absolutely buzzing. I couldn’t be prouder of my boy.”
