Many die-hard tench fanatics go a lifetime without catching even a double-figure example of their favourite species, but last week one lucky carper smashed that milestone with his very first tinca!
Louis Green was enjoying a session at Oxford’s Linear Fisheries when he landed the thickset specimen scaling 12lb 14oz – a fish that’s only two-and-a-half pounds off the British Record.
The popular complex is best known for its carp, although it’s also a favourite with anglers searching for specimen-sized fish of other species, and the Tenchfishers group even hold their annual Tench Championships there.

Louis was coming to the end of a 24-hour session on Brasenose 1 – the same lake that Dai Gribble caught his British record-equalling 4lb 3oz roach from in 2024 – when he had the take.
“I was using boilies, and hadn’t caught any carp, but just as I was packing up, one of my rods screamed off.
“The fight was brilliant, and once the fish was in the net and on the scales, it was amazing to see the needle settle on 12lb 14oz,” he said.
The tench smashed the lake record and is also believed to be a new best for the whole complex, topping the previous joint record of 12lb 11oz – one of which was caught last year from Oxlease Lake.
“It was my first-ever tench too!” Louis added.
