This fine tench was John Baker’s reward on a trip to his local gravel pit, in which he also landed a fish of 9lb 5oz.
Targeting a clear spot next to an island, John fished two rods with fake maggot and caster hookbaits over maggots, hemp and pellets.
He didn’t feed loads, introducing just six medium Spombs of bait over each of his rods. His session kicked off with a tench of 5lb 8oz, after which he topped up with another three Spombs over each of his rods.
When his next bite came, John lifted into another tench and, with the lake very weedy, he quickly brought the fish within netting range. At this point, he saw a large tail slap on the surface and instantly knew that this wasn’t one that he wanted to lose!
Thankfully, after a series of powerful lunges in the weed, he had it in the net. Weighing 11lb exactly, it smashed his previous PB of 9lb 8oz. Not long after landing it, John then banked the nine-pounder to cap his session off.
