It is winter fishing at its best on Wyreside Lakes at the moment with anglers currently enjoying some of the best roach sport in the UK. Pike anglers are also paying the six lake complex a visit catching fish to 21lb.
The venue has always been renowned for its roach sport with fish to 2lb in nets to 40lb commonplace. The best lakes to head to for top redfin sport are Sunny 2 and Fox. Simple waggler or pole tactics with loose-fed maggot and caster or even hemp work well on here. Start by fishing on the deck and loose-feeding little and often for a bite a chuck action using fairly light rigs with strung out shot.
For the predators it is best to head to Wyre and River Lakes. There are plenty of jacks from 5-12lb coming out recently so action is virtually guaranteed even on deadbaits. Anglers targeting these fish are mainly catching them on sea deads including lamprey and mackerel.
If you do fancy a spot of carp sport, anglers are still taking fish well over 20lb on Sunny 1. The lake responds well to low feed tactics with Stickybaits or Cell boilies working well.
Wyre Lake – 16.5 acres contains specimen carp and pike. Target the deeper swims 11-15 on cold days.
Sunny 1 - This water holds the biggest carp on the complex as well as loads of mid-doubles. The lake record is 'Pecks' at 33lb.
Sunny 2 – This is one of the lakes with the best roach sport. Corner swims always seem to hold the fish, for example, pegs 9, 14, 15. There are also carp to 25lb.
River Lake – Pike to over 20lb as well as carp to 30lb lurk in this shallow pool. There is a sunken ‘fish holding’ island in the middle.
Bantons Lake – An 11.7 acre lake with many plateaus, bars and silt beds where carp to 32lb reside.
Fox’s Lake - A 4 acre water stocked with tench, chubb, perch, rudd, bream and carp. An ideal day-ticket bagging water.
