The biggest common in the Avenue has been banked at an all-time high of 49lb 9oz.
The Shropshire venue has bounced back in style after the loss of its 60lb mirror, Jona, last October. Matt Timmins banked the new lake record, named Ellie, during a day session in the swim known as the L Bar.
The 29-year-old from West Bromwich told Angling Times: “I hadn’t seen any fish show, so I decided to fish towards the central bar at 65 to 70yds, which is always good for a bite.
“I baited with two dozen or so Retro Baits Meaty Garlic boilies and fished matching pop-ups as the hookbait. I had a few liners during the morning then the bite came at around 2pm and it was a screaming take.
“The fight was good and she took line and stayed deep until rolling close to the net. A fellow angler, Dave Haydock, who had offered his netting services said ‘that’s one of the big commons – I think it’s Ellie!’.
“A few nervous minutes later she was in the net and I knew a new personal best was on the cards.”
Matt used a 20lb combi rig with a size 8 curved-shank hook.
