Huge 222lb skate taken off Northern Ireland coast

A session on board the Predator II charter boat ended with Andrew Logan netting this huge skate which experts estimate weighed 222lb.

The Carrick Fergus Specimen Hunters club member was taken to an area of very deep water behind the renowned Rathlin Island off the north coast and shortly after casting out the rod was ripped off the rest as the big fish swallowed his whole dogfish hookbait.

Skipper Hamish Currie was astonished at the power of the fish and revealed special measures were taken to make sure the battle ended successfully.

“The skate took off so fast that we had to put the anchor down to stop it dragging the boat along! It fought incredibly well but after an hour she was landed,” said Hamish.
