The Best Margin Poles

by Angling Times |

Margin poles were created to take on heavyweight commercial fishery carp. It wasn’t that long ago when there was more chat about fish that could smash poles than there was about pegs, baits and rigs.

The first wave of margin poles were willowy, bendy affairs that felt like they’d been constructed with the expectation that they’d bend rather than snap!

But when it came to fishing with them at anything longer than 6m-8m, they were found wanting. Overly weighty and unwieldy, difficult to manoeuvre, and distinctly top heavy, especially when fitted with a strong hollow elastics, they were agricultural at best!

That was back in the day, though – their modern-day counterparts are altogether different beasts.

Advances in carbon materials and build technologies have seen the latest margin poles not only go upwards in length, with 10m plus not uncommon, but they now have super-strong section wall strengths that can cope with the heaviest of elastics, goodly amounts of stiffness. They’re angler-friendly in their lightness and handling qualities.

Below, we showcase the best margin poles currently on the market.

Matrix MTX Margin 8.7m

Built using the same mandrel and advanced carbon technologies as its illustrious MTX stablemates, Matrix’s six-sectioned powerhouse of a margin pole is strong enough for any commercial fishery, designed with lots of detail including reinforced section joints, glide anti-friction taped sections which reassuringly lock together, and section alignment arrows. Top kits come with pre-bushed PTFE tips and Revolve side pullers.

The MTX is well balanced and exceptionally lightweight at just 680g at its full length. It comes with two spare Power kits and a carry sleeve.

The pole can also boast Daiwa’s unique taping system over its top sections that makes it easy to ship as well as keeping its weight down. The strong-as-you-like Interlastic top kits come fully fitted with PTFE tips and nose cone bushes that have size 20 elastic ratings. Drennan Acolyte Margin 9.5m

This slim, lightweight, and super-strong Drennan Acolyte Margin is more than a match for any commercial fishery carp.

The seven-section 9.5m pole comes complete with reversible mini extension. It also has uniquely designed short top kits pre-fitted with Roller cone side-slot kits. The 2.3m top kits are thought to be the optimum length for margin tactics, where having a shorter length of elastic offers more control over big fish in snaggy swims. The original Acolyte Margin also comes with a very impressive spares package including two margin kits, plus a Ghost Margin kit and a superb Drennan pole accessory pack.

Matrix Torque 4.5 and 6m margin poles

Short they may be, but what they lack in length these two poles certainly make up for in performance. Both share a lot of features with the longer Matrix Torque Carp Poles, but their reduced length suits those who prefer to fish really short or tucked under the margins. Ideal for big carp, their enlarged ceramic side puller kits are more than capable of housing extra-large hollow elastics without sticking. Other features include a large-bore top kit and an easy-to-ship Glide taped finish. Both poles come with one top kit inside. Surprisingly lightweight at just 189g (4.5m) and 299g (6m), they’d make a welcome addition to any commercial angler’s pole holdall.

Shimano BeastMaster 8.5m

The 8.5m Shimano BeastMaster Margin has been produced to never let you down. Built with plenty of fish-stopping power, it’s got many improvements over the original Shimano Beastmaster. This includes Safety Zone, which provides the pole with exceptional strength by constructing it using a series of conical bands which improve its compression strength. This means that you never need to worry about landing a huge margin carp. Another of the great technologies in play is the pole’s ‘S.A.S’ alignment system, an optimising feature which marks the backbone of each individual section for stiffness.
