The best mid-priced all-rounder poles

by Angling Times |

NOT all anglers need 16m of carbon to enjoy pole fishing, and while short, starter poles are great to begin with, at some point you’ll want to upgrade to something which can do it all.

Look for a pole that will reach beyond the maximum distance you need to fish. For many anglers, 13m is a great maximum length, as it will cover most open-water situations.

Although mostly used at under 14.5m, a 16m pole is essential if you want to match fish, as there will always be times and places where you’ll need that extra reach to compete with the rest of the field.

Poles don’t last forever – joints wear and sections deteriorate – but a pole that’s compatible with other models means you can take your top kits with you when you replace or upgrade it.

Although most tackle shops will offer a pole repair service, choosing a model with good spares availability and compatibility will ensure you can get back fishing again soon.

Big fish and margin fishing will require Power kits to take heavy elastics. Match kits will perform better at longer lengths and are perfect for lighter elastics and smaller fish. Short kits are cost-effective and very popular for F1 fishing, but they reduce the length of your pole. Look for a pole package that includes the top kits you want, or has them available as extras.

Some top kits will come with bushes and pullers already fitted. Having pullers fitted will incur extra cost. But you can always use a standard bung or a bung with a puller built in.

Virtually all modern poles are either super-strong carp poles or top all-rounder poles that will handle both carp and silverfish.

Here’s our pick of what’s on the market right now...
