During the warm summer months there isn’t a better way to fish for carp than on the surface. Watching your floating hookbait disappear into the mouth of a carp followed shortly by the tightening of your line and the tip of your carp rod bending round can’t fail to get your heart beating that little bit faster. The other great thing about the tactic is that you have a realistic chance of catching a few fish in a short period of time. A few hours after work are all you need to put a fish on the bank.

When it comes to surface fishing, there is no place for beefy 3lb-plus test curve rods. Using too strong a rod with the small hooks and light lines required will leave you pulling your hair out with hook-pulls.

A rod with a test curve between 1.75lb and 2.5lb is much more suitable and will enable you to be much more accurate when flicking out light controller floats. A progressive action will help to absorb any last minute lunges at the net and reduce hook-pulls.

A hook-keeper ring is also a useful feature to look out for when purchasing a floater rod. When moving swims it is much easier to have your long 6ft hooklength fixed in place as opposed to it flapping around and catching on every bush you walk past! Spring is arguably the most pivotal phase in the :a[calendar of a carp]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/news/stories/the-carp-fishing-calendar-adam-penning/' }, and two key physiological changes will be taking place.

Firstly, the fish will be driven to boost their body temperature. Being cold-blooded, carp are the same temperature as the water and their entire biological system will have been operating on a muted setting for several months.

Increased temperature gives rise to appetite, improved metabolic rate and readiness for the second requirement, which is preparation for spawning. This element will have a varying effect on :a[how we fish for the carp]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/starting-carp-fishing-tackle-and-tips-for-beginners/' }, depending on the condition/age of those we are trying to catch.

## When it pays to be conservative {#h-when-it-pays-to-be-conservative}

If my target is :a[old and fat carp]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/where-to-fish/fishing-near-me-the-best-lakes-to-catch-a-20lb-plus-carp/' } (which it often is!) then I will temper my bait application accordingly. Countless times during the three spring months of March, April and May I have seen :a[aggressive baiting fail spectacularly]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/bait/how-to-change-your-carp-fishing-baits-with-the-seasons/' }, while a more conservative approach fared much more favourably.

Most of the time I am not intent on establishing a bait – I am simply focused on getting in the same area that the carp are using and then fishing for a bite using just enough bait to nail a single fish. Often :a[the approach will be PVA bags]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/rigs/kev-hewitts-foolproof-guide-to-solid-pva-bags/' }, singles or light baiting with a boilie rocket, and I will usually select :a[a boilie-only approach]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/bait/best-boilies-for-fishing/' } using Krill Active.

Whites, yellows and pinks are at their best during this phase, and if you can get one right where the fish are, then often that will be enough.

## When to feed more {#h-when-to-feed-more}

In this situation I’d be looking at a mix of whole and crumbed baits, :a[mixed with pellets and corn]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/bait/particle-fishing-spring-carp-ian-russell/' }.

Naturally, you need to apply this where the fish are, as this is the absolute cornerstone of all successful carp angling. It’s important to remember that carp are ‘solar powered’, so areas to look for would invariably include sections of south-facing bank, particularly reeds and snags that get sunshine all day.

This is the time when, for the first time in months, :a[carp will begin to visit the margins]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/how-to-catch-big-carp-in-the-margins/' } looking for food so be aware of this, take your polarised specs and expect to see them close-in if the water is clear.

Again, there are no rules, and the carp in each lake will often respond differently, but don't be surprised to find them on the end of a wind that feels quite cold. If it is still ten degrees in April, the water is about the same and you are presented with a stiff north-easterly breeze, then it isn't going to chill the water much at all, despite it feeling Arctic to the angler.

I’ve often found that :a[new spring winds are followed by the fish]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/what-the-weather-means-for-your-fishing/' }, sometimes immediately and sometimes even if it is a brutally cold one!

Conversely, carp being what they are, there are also many times when I have found the fish on the back of a cold wind, perhaps basking or cruising in the calm water in the lee of an island. This is often where they can end up after having followed a cold wind for a day or two, enjoying the hatches and oxygen, before then choosing the warmth instead.

With carp being wild animals, :a[there are no hard and fast rules]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/basic-carp-fishing-tips-that-you-need-to-catch-on-every-trip-bev-clifford/' } – it is down to you, the angler, to consider all the options but, above all, to spend your time burning those optical calories to ensure you get yourself in the right place. Tench are often a fish anglers look to target as the temperatures begin to warm up and it seems those who have decided to make tench their main priority have seen their effort being rewarded.

Lee Fisher is one angler who has caught a fantastic fish on a recent :a[session to a local pond]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/where-to-fish/fishing-near-me-where-to-catch-a-net-of-tench/' }, when he landed seven tench with this fantastic 8lb 12oz tench, being the best of the session.

Lee used his favoured flatbed :a[Method Feeder tactics]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/rigs/awesome-commercial-feeder-fishing-rigs/' } with a small pellet hookbait, with pellets and groundbait moulded around the feeder. "I've caught some cracking Tench in the handful of trips I've done so far this spring, but I know there are one or two really big ones in there."

One of the questions I get asked probably more than any other is where to clip up the spod rod in comparison to the marker float. Some say leave it at the same distance, whereas others say shorten it by a foot for every 3ft of depth. Now, that’s a significant difference of opinion so I'll delve into what I have experienced underwater.

We set up a 1.5m-by-1.5m square box on the bottom of the lake, in 11ft of water 50yds from the bank.

A marker float was cast out to the spot and an Impact Spod was clipped up to the same distance as the marker lead. A filled spod was cast out and, having hit the clip correctly (and this is important), it deposited the bait 3ft behind the target zone. The same test was repeated, and again it fell 3ft ‘too far’.

As usual, I was bedecked in my diving gear watching all this happen underwater, so I then moved the spod until it was touching the marker float on the surface, and asked the lads to clip up once more and try again. This time the bait landed in the box, and it did so again several times when we repeated the experiment.

## **The ‘clipping-up’ conundrum** {#h-the-clipping-up-conundrum}

Having seen that the bait was landing 3ft farther than the marker when the spod was clipped up at the same distance as the marker lead, we then checked the difference between the one he had clipped up and the one I had set ‘bang on the money’.

Our conclusion was that in 11ft of water you could take 3ft off your spod rod line to end up baiting in the middle of your marked spot. Now, don’t be fooled into thinking that this will be 1ft for every 4ft of water depth across the board.

An equally important factor is the :a[distance you are casting]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/news/stories/you-can-cast-150yds-says-terry-edmonds/' }, so I would follow the law of diminishing returns. If your water is half as deep again – ie almost 18ft – then I’d perhaps add half again to the amount you take off the spod rod before clipping it up, so I’d take off 4.5ft in total, as opposed to the 6ft it would be if it were a foot for every three.

## **Consistent casting** {#h-consistent-casting}

I mentioned a moment ago that it was important to hit the clip ‘correctly’, but what exactly does that mean?

Hit it too hard and it will bounce back off the clip, too soft and it will not get to the spot at all. Cast too low and there is again a risk of bounce back, too high and it will be carried by the wind away from the drop zone. So where exactly is the best place to hit the clip?

Ideally the cast needs enough power to get to your chosen spot, and then start dropping. You should be hitting the clip between 2ft to 6ft above the water to get the best and most accurate drop. The lower it hits the clip the further away from you the bait will spread.

The higher you hit it, the more chance there will be of sideways spread as the wind and bow in the line take over. Remember also that bounce back is exaggerated when using braid, as we all do on our spod rods.

It’s easy to think that because you hit the clip that the spod made the distance, but if you hit it too hard and you get a bounce back of 6ft (which may not look a lot from the perspective of the bank) it means that the bait will drop well short of the target.

The key is consistency, and you can check this by looking at how much line you have to reel in before you ‘connect’ with the spod before rewinding to reload. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to reel in any slack at all – you should be in direct contact with the spod on the surface, after it has deposited its load.

## **Where do you want your freebies?** {#h-where-do-you-want-your-freebies}

It’s important to remember that different :a[people want their hookbait]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/bait/best-pop-up-boilie-hookbaits-for-carp-fishing/' } in different places relative to their bait spread. It’s important to remember that :a[proper accuracy and consistency]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tackle/how-to-cast-a-carp-rod-accurately/' } is the key here.

If you cast differently each time, your bait will spread differently. Equally if you are not accurate, your spread will be wide. I can’t emphasise it enough – practise ‘consistent’ casting to take that hugely significant problem out of the equation. Accuracy and keeping bait and rigs tight, without any shadow of doubt, is a key factor in my success.

## How bait spreads {#h-how-bait-spreads}

So, with :a[the ‘clipping up’ distance]{href='https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/know-how-far-out-youre-fishing-every-time/' } covered, the other major thing to consider is how certain baits fall through the water and how far they spread out on the way down.
