The annual Maver British Pole Championships held at the prolific Larford Lakes turned out to be a tight affair but it was Mark Griffiths who weighed 55-480 to scoop the coveted trophy and £1,500 cash prize.
With 120 top quality competitors spread across all three waters at the Stourport complex, it was anyone’s guess where the champion would come from but it was the Specimen Lake that produced the goods.
After drawing peg 70 on the pool, Ringer Baits ace Mark decided to fish corn and pellet at 14.5m and was rewarded with six carp and plenty of skimmers.
Fully aware the line would produce less action as the hours rolled by, Mark kept trickling bait at 5m and in the closing stages the spot was solid with fish and he capitalised on the situation, taking a series of lumps to over 15lb to pull away from his rivals.
One more fish for Neil Machin would have completely rewritten the script though, with the Garbolino and Bag’em Baits ace coming agonisingly close to victory with 54-180.
