'Many of our rivers are a complete mess!' says watchdog

A group campaigning for the well-being of the nation's riers has hit back at claims that our waterways are better than ever - and produced its own list of problem venues.

Just a few weeks ago the Environment Agency published its 'Back fromthe Brink' paper, claiming that Britain's rivers were the healthiest for 20 years.

But the report was rubbished by many for being 'overspun', including the Our Rivers group which has now put together its own hit-list of affected waters - popular river stretches that are being devastated by pollution, abstraction and depleted fish stocks.
