Mark Brayne took advantage of the recent favourable weather conditions for barbelfishing and headed to the River Trent, where he caught this clonking 17lb new personal best!

With low pressure and a full moon due, he knew he needed to be out fishing, but with just an umbrella for shelter and torrential rain setting in, he wasn't going to be able to stay long.

“At around 8pm my downstream rod burst into life and I connected with a heavy and powerful fish," he told us.

“To be honest, at first I thought it was a carp, because its fight didn’t have any of the characteristics of my target species. But, when the fish surfaced, I saw a very long barbel!

“It weighed bang on 17lb – a new PB–and I caught it on a 20mm freshwater shrimp boilie.”
