If you are serious about your barbel fishing, you will be well aware of Kings Weir on the River Lea. This has to be one of, if not the premier stretch in the country to catch big barbel, with the current 22lb British Record caught at the superb fishery.
One angler who catches his fair share of big barbel from the Lea is Julian Barnes. On his most recent outing, the Cambridgeshire big-fish ace banked the biggest barbel reported this season, tipping the scales at an incredible 19lb 8oz. At such an impressive weight already, who knows just how big it might be in the coming months.
What’s more, in the same session he landed two other crackers, weighing 17lb 10oz and 13lb 1oz, and the trip closely followed his catch reported in last week’s issue of Angling Times, in which he landed two other barbel of 17lb 15oz and 16lb 7oz!
“Wanting to make the most of the feeding spell on this very tricky venue, triggered by the change in weather, I hit the banks of Kings Weir again and managed the three other big barbel,” Julian told us.
“A combi-rig and jet-black boilie hookbait did the trick in an up-and-coloured river.”
