Stalking pays off with 13lb 6oz barbel at end of season

A roving approach produced this 13lb 6oz Warwickshire Avon barbel for Walsall angler Ryan Smith.

The fish is a new personal best for the 35-year-old and was caught using a legered hair-rigged meat hookbait cast over a gravel run on a Barford Angling Association controlled stretch of the waterway. Ryan, whose tackle consisted of 15lb mainline, 12lb mono hooklink tied to a size 10 hook, decided a minimal feed and light tackle approach would allow him to stalk the river more successfully and he also landed a second fish of 8lb during the quick session.
