James Ellis crowned a quartet of fine winter captures with this 44lb 2oz mirror.
The fish, known as The Nunn, capped a memorable few months at Essex’s Fryerning syndicate for the 34-year-old roofer. In December he bagged XL Pecks at 41lb, having previously caught Four Scales at 41lb in November and the Pretty Fish at 35lb in October.
“It’s been a good winter campaign,” said James, “I’ve had one a month and I’m now after the six or seven big fish I haven’t had from there.”
All four of the fish have fallen to single hookbaits fished into open water. Explaining the capture of the Nunn, the north London rod said: “I arrived after dark on a Friday and the lake was packed, so I went in the only swim left.
“It’s a swim I know pretty well so I knew what I was dealing with. At 1.30am that night I had a screaming take and it felt like pulling into a lump of lead. I knew it was a decent fish but I didn’t know which one it was until I got it in the net. It really is an awesome fish.”
James, who bagged three forties and two thirties in a session from the venue in 2012, fished Nash Monster Squid boilies on KD rigs tied with Nash Fang Twister hooks.
