A run of 23 biteless nights was ended in style by Paul Bennett as he smashed his personal best with this 40lb 8oz mirror.
Fishing the expansive Grenville Lake in Cambridgeshire, the Mad Baits tester also bagged a 33lb 2oz mirror less than six hours later
With a strong southerly wind at his back, Paul targeted spots at 176 and 160 yards and hit into the bigger carp at 10.30am on the second morning of his stay.
He said: “What transpired after a very spirited fight at extreme range simply blew me away. On netting the fish I thought to myself ‘that looks a lump’ and the rest is history, as they say. This was my first carp after 23 carpless nights and a new PB and first UK 40-pounder.
“I was still on cloud nine when at about 4pm the same rod was away again. After a very spirited fight at long range I netted yet another lump at 33lb 2oz. It just doesn’t get any better!”
Paul fed a scattering of Zing and Force boilies in various sizes, with 12mm pop-ups on his rigs.
