An emotional return to Monks Pool saw Spencer Wright catch a brace of forties for more than 90lb.
It was the Isle of Wight angler’s first session at the local venue since burying his fishing companion, Rascal the carp dog, at the water.
A visit to Rascal’s resting place at the start of the trip inspired Spencer to catch mirrors of 42lb 9oz and 47lb 10oz.
Having placed his rigs close to showing fish, the CC Moore-backed rod settled in for a humid night under his brolly.
“The next thing I knew,” said Spencer, “My Neville was screaming for my attention and line was being ripped from the spool, taking 40 yards on its first charge.
“The fight continued in the same vein right the way through the 20-minute battle. As the bells of a local church rang out signalling midnight I knew I was gaining the upper hand. I managed to drag the heavyweight over the chord and looked down, knowing I had the king of the pond, Boxer, in the bottom of my net.”
About three hours later another take produced a second lengthy fight and the smaller of the two forties at 42lb 9oz.
Said Spencer: “I like to think that I had some intervention from my best friend, Rascal, who I’m sure was nearby while I was there.”
Both the fish fell to CC Moore XXX and Northern Special hookbaits presented on snowman rigs over a bed of XXX freebies. The rigs were reverse combis, made from ESP Sink Link and Bristle Filament with size 6 Stiff Rigger hooks.
