River clean-up creates fishing opportunities

Volunteers and council staff have teamed up to make a weed-choked waterway more accessible to anglers.

Over 300 people signed a petition to clear Grimsby’s River Freshney of overgrown plants and rubbish and, after responding to the calls, a crew of workers worked tirelessly to clean up the waterway, creating space for fishing platforms to be installed in the future.

Trentside Fishery boss Tony Booth spearheaded the campaign and he told Angling Times: “This venue is stuffed with fish and youngsters were always on it until things got out of hand. It was about time we restored it to its natural beauty,”
