First reservoir pike session produces a twenty pounder

This beautifully-marked 20lb pike was the highlight of Sam Edmonds’ first session on a large Midlands reservoir.

Fishing from a boat, the Hertfordshire-based schoolboy and his dad, Gary, tried several different spots before finding the fish in a weedy area of the 750-acre venue. The 15-year-old was quickly working a Kuusamo spoon over thick weeds when the big predator struck, taking the lure some 30yds from the boat.

“I saw a swirl on the surface and then the fish buried itself in the weed,” said Sam.

“I knew there were some good pike in the water, but I wasn’t expecting to catch a twenty on my first trip.”

Sam beat the pike with a 50lb Power Pro braid mainline and a 40lb Surflon Micro Supreme wire trace.
