British Waterways has revealed that this year’s Stillwater Championships have been cancelled.
The event, which has a £3,000 prize pot for the eventual winner, became an attractive proposition to many of the nation’s most famous matchmen, but officials at BW have indicated that a lack of resources and staffing has forced them to pull the plug on the event for 2010.
“The man hours required to cover the administration for an event of this size is no longer at the department’s disposal, making this decision a hard but necessary one,” explained event organiser Carl Nicholls.
AT columnist Steve Ringer had never won the event, but always harboured a desire to add it to his lengthy CV. Indeed, he had made winning the trophy one of his main goals for the year.
“It is a shame to hear the Stillwater Champs have been pulled because it leaves a big hole in the match calendar. Venues like Drayton and Boddington are fantastic waters, but matchmen now have little reason to fish them,” said Steve.
