Small bait tempts giant Lower Severn barbel

While the logic of ‘big baits for big fish’ often rings true, sometimes a much smaller offering can produce the goods.

That’s what John Care found on a trip to the Lower Severn, when he had this monster 17lb 12oz specimen on a small flavoured 10mm pellet, which he wrapped in a thin layer of paste.

This was fished on a straight lead set-up, using a size 12 hook to compliment the reduced bait size.

With flooding making rivers tricky and unpredictable at the moment, this awesome catch is all the more impressive.
