England’s World Champs preparation gets off to strong start

The England Feeder Team's preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Spain got off to a strong start as three of the squad finished in the top 10 of what was widely seen as a warm up event.

Manager Dean Barlow and his troops headed off to compete in the Merida Masters on the Guadiana River, with Adam Wakelin, Lee Kerry, Mick Vials, Rob Wootton, Steve Ringer and Will Freeman selected.

The three day event was seen as the perfect way to learn more about the venue before the big event which takes place on May 4 and 5.

Excellent fishing for big fish was experienced by all, and although the team plan is a closely guarded secret and is yet to be set in stone, it's almost certain that the exercise would have been a worthwhile one.

At the end of the three days Will Freeman finished third, Lee Kerry in sixth and Steve Ringer in seventh.

Writing on social media upon the conclusion of the tournament, Dean Barlow said: "I'm just about to board the plane home after a visit to the Merida Masters in Spain.

"The Drennan England Feeder Team has been fishing, and it's been a great insight into what's in store for our return in three weeks' time for the World Championship."

French angler Olivier Gielczynski won the event, with Czech Republic's Josep Konopasek taking second.
