The pellet waggler is usually a tactic associated with summer bagging, but a top commercial angler showed it can be tweaked to work wonders in winter as he put together a colossal match winning haul.

Dynamite Baits backed star Paul Wright entered the open event at Doncaster’s Hayfield Lakes and found himself drawn on peg 56 of the Dannie’s Island Lake.

He decided to put all his eggs in one basket and set up one waggler rod to explore the deep water in front of him.

Fishing between 9ft and 11ft deep while feeding a sprinkling of 8mm pellets over the top, he soon had the carp competing, with fish to double figures frequently going into the net.

Come the all-out it was clear that he had won with ease and the scales revealed that he had accumulated 226lb.

Backing weights were impressive for this time of year too. Kev Smith took second place for peg 13 with 89lb 7oz, while Andy Wood’s 75lb 15oz haul from peg 52 finished off the frame.
