In match fishing, being handy with a rod or a pole will only get you so far. The anglers who keep making finals and producing results don’t rely on luck. They think with purpose, they prepare with intent, and they treat every match like it deserves their full attention. If you’re serious about improving your results, it won't be your gear that needs changing - it’s your thinking.

HERE ARE 9 TIPS TO HELP YOU WIN MORE MATCHES.

Preparation matters

Plenty of anglers talk about preparation, but most stop at the basics. Real preparation means showing up with options - rigs tied, bait ready, kit sorted so there's nothing left to question once the all-in comes. Jamie Hughes doesn’t turn up to a match wondering what might work. He turns up with a plan shaped by understanding of the stock, the recent form, and the conditions on the day. That’s not guesswork, It’s groundwork. It means when the conditions change or the situation shifts - and it always does - he’s never caught out.

If you’re still plumbing up or mixing groundbait when the match starts, you’ve already sacrificed the first ten minutes. Those early fish often define your result. Preparation buys time.

Make a plan, but be prepared to change

Every match starts with a plan. What line you’ll start on, how you’ll feed it, what species you’ll target, but the peg won't always follow your script and the anglers who perform consistently are the ones who recognise when to change - and don’t hesitate.

Steve Ringer once scrapped his feeder approach twenty minutes into a world final. He saw it wasn’t working, shifted tactics, and pulled a result from a match that was getting away from him. That’s not luck. That’s composure and far too many anglers let half a match slip by trying to make something work that never will.

Adaptation isn’t always instinct. It’s awareness

The anglers who win aren’t guessing - they’re paying attention. If the bites slow, they don’t hesitate. If the wind changes, they adapt. If fish show themselves in a different depth or area, they’ve already got a line ready to go.

Fishing shallow for skimmers on a venue dominated by carp might seem counterintuitive. But when the conditions are flat and the carp have switched off and the rest of the field sits trying to get them to switch on, the angler who adjusts quietly, builds a weight of different species. It’s not bold, it’s what anyone paying proper attention should be doing. It’s obvious to anyone who’s considering the effects of the conditions and the fish’s behaviour.

Stay in your lane

High-stakes matches are rarely quiet. Between the bank runners, the crowd chat, and the rumours of someone "hauling" at the other end of the lake, there is a constant stream of external noise designed to break your concentration. You can't let that chatter get inside your head.

You can’t catch fish that aren’t in front of you. If someone else is hauling, that doesn’t change what’s in your swim - don’t chase it. Stay with your plan until the peg tells you otherwise.

Consistency isn’t luck

The elite don't just think differently, they act with a rhythm that removes the need for "luck." Consistency comes from repeatable habits. By automating the basics - the way you ship back, the timing of your feed, the layout of your side tray, you preserve your mental energy for the big decisions.

When Ringer won his section in every match of the UK Champs in 2024, it wasn’t luck of the draw. He knew what weight would win at each venue, and he didn't make mistakes. He understood what tactics would achieve that and he executed, and while that kind of consistency isn’t exciting - it’s effective.

Anyone can have a good day, but consistent performers make a habit of them. They prepare properly, adapt intelligently, and treat each match like it’s their job to win it.

Get your head right

You don’t need top-end gear to make good decisions. You need awareness, discipline and honesty. You need to pay attention to what the fish are telling you, and you need the confidence to act on it.

Mindset isn’t bravado. It’s knowing when to change, when to stick it out, and when to rip up a plan that isn’t working. You can’t buy it, but you can learn it. And once you’ve mastered it, it shows up in every match you fish.
