The modern fishing pole is an incredibly versatile and effective tool that can significantly enhance your angling success. However, it's important to understand that the pole itself is not a magic wand. To truly maximise its potential, you need to use it correctly in conjunction with other techniques and strategies.

OUR GUIDE TO THE BEST FISHING POLES WILL HELP YOU CHOOSE THE PERFECT POLE FOR YOU.

Precision and delicacy

One of the greatest advantages of a fishing pole is its ability to present your bait with unparalleled precision and delicacy. This is especially important when targeting wary fish or fishing in challenging conditions. The long carbon pole allows you to control your line and bait with greater accuracy, increasing your chances of a successful hookset.

Plumb your swim accurately

When fishing a new swim, it's easy to be drawn to obvious features like overhanging trees or submerged structures. However, these visible elements might not be the most productive spots. To truly maximise your chances of success, it's essential to thoroughly plumb your entire swim choices in your peg.

By carefully exploring the contours of the bottom, you can discover hidden fish-holding areas that may not be apparent from the bank. These could include submerged ledges, drop-offs, or even small depressions in the bottom. By plumbing your swim, you're essentially creating a map of the deck, allowing you to target the most promising spots.

Use a light float

When targeting carp, especially in depths ranging from 3 to 6 feet, using light floats can significantly increase your chances of success. A light float allows for a slower descent of the hookbait, which can be more enticing to cruising carp.

Fish to features

Fish often congregate around features such as submerged structures, weed beds, or overhanging trees. However, it's important to approach these areas strategically to avoid spooking the fish.

Instead of fishing directly up to the feature, start by presenting your bait slightly off the feature, this may be a slightly deeper area. This allows you to present your bait in a more natural way, giving the fish time to observe and react. Once you've caught a few fish, you can gradually move closer to the feature and to shallower water to target the fish as they grow in confidence.

Make it happen

One of the most effective ways to attract carp in to your peg is by loose feeding pellets. Ping a few hard 4mm or 6mm pellets over the top of the float to try and pull a few fish into the swim. Three or four pellets at a time will be enough to do this.
