The event was a roaring success for Team England.

A 40m wide navigable canal near Migliarino in the Province of Ferrara would be the venue that they’d have to conquer, with bream, skimmers, catfish, and carp the target species.

Day one went to plan as the squad took second place with an 11-point tally, only missing out on the win due to having a slightly lower aggregate weight than France. Darren Cox was the star performer on the day with a section win, with Simon Fry runner up in his zone.

The pressure was on going into day two and given a good draw, few would back against the experience and talent within England’s ranks.

The verdict was that the draw hadn’t been particularly kind, but the lads held their nerve to bring back a steady set of results, banking 19 points on the day.

France held on to win the team gold, with England and Germany tied on 30 points. Thankfully, England came out on the right side of the battle on overall weight, landing them a well-deserved silver medal.

Over to the individual side of things and it was extremely tight, with five anglers all tied on three points. Once again, England got the nod on weight, with Simon Fry crowned individual World Champion.

Speaking after the results were announced Darren Cox was clearly beaming with pride and said: “Simon and I spend our lives fishing and working together and today was seriously special. After dominating practice all week, he turned up the gas the way he does and became Masters Feeder World Champion. He had a chance and took it – Take a bow Si!

“As a team we took silver. Today is a special day to celebrate the achievement of my partner in crime and our fantastic squad.”
