Sewage spills doubled in 2023 from already unacceptable levels

Shocking new figures show that the sewage problem is in fact twice as bad as we thought!

Environment Agency data reveals that raw sewage was discharged for over 3.6m hours in 2023 – a vast increase over the 1.75m in 2022. That makes it the worst year yet for storm water pollution, with an average of 1,271 spills a day in England.

“This confirms that our failing government and water companies have no shame, or any money left to spend on infrastructure after they’ve pocketed their profits,” said Dr Doug Parr, policy director for Greenpeace UK.

“We need a block on all water company dividends and bonuses until we see real improvements, and we need it now.”
