How political is pollution? | Rob Hughes

Wherever we look these days, there is a story in the news about pollution. Usually, the water companies are causing it, or the regulators are failing to do something about it. And where there is public opinion, there’s usually a politician somewhere looking to score some brownie points.

Red, blue, gold or green, they all blame the others for the failings in the system, and they all have a wonderful solution. In England at the moment, it’s blue. In Wales it’s red, and across the border to the north, it’s gold. However, all three countries have the same pollution issues, run by different colours. It’s not a party issue, more a governance one.

The party voices say they will do something, but words are cheap, and talk is easy. It’s time now for those at the top to put their political money where their mouth is. It would be a vote winner, for sure.

And that’s where we come in. A general election looms, and there are serious issues to contend with. Transport, education, health and immigration are the usual hot topics, but as a nation we are all becoming more environmentally aware, especially of the water quality issues that threaten our environment.

The publicity that pollution has received is widespread, and that’s why the work of the Angling Trust, Fish Legal, The Wild Trout Trust, and especially Angling Times, is so important. A letter to your MP, asking what their party is going to do about the appalling record of the water companies and the regulators, goes a surprisingly long way to help the fight.

And if we were all to vote a certain way it could have a huge effect on the outcome of the next election.
