Quality grayling caught ‘Stret pegging’

After spotting a large grayling lying up close to the bank, Stephen Dewhurst employed a tactic rarely seen in modern fishing to catch it.

Stret pegging involves fishing a float well overdepth on a river, allowing the hookbait to be fished almost static or eased through the swim. It’s deadly in the right situation, as Stephen proved with this 3lb 1oz River Test fish.

He began by introducing half a baitdropper of maggots onto the spot, before presenting his hookbait accurately over the top.

Watching the fish move over the baited area, he then saw his olivette, which was sat on the riverbed, bolt forwards as the fish took the bait.
