Reports of big barbel are beginning to come in thick and fast from the River Trent, as recent rains have seen rivers across the country hit top form.

Daniel Grant was one angler to cash in on the incredible sport on offer on the Middle Trent, where on just his second visit to his club water he caught this superb 16lb 8oz specimen.

"I ventured over from my home in South Wales for a 48-hour session on a stretch I have just gained access to," he told us.

"The first night produced two small barbel and a chub, but the next day, just as the light faded, the rod hooped over and I was connected to what felt like the riverbed!

"A hard fight followed, but eventually the fish was landed.

“I knew it’d be a new PB, which was confirmed when the scales settled on 16lb 8oz. It was a true middle Trent monster, and what a fish for my second trip there this season. Hopefully, there will be more to come.”
