An angler using a Method feeder, a quivertip rod and a seatbox has just landed a series of mind-blowing carp, topped by a 72lb leviathan.

Attila Forbauer lives in Doncaster but originally hails from Hungary. He started fishing as a teenager and developed an interest in targeting big carp but wasn’t a fan of the typical tactics.

Impressed by the catch rate of match anglers, Attila wondered if he could make specimen carping ‘more interesting’ and bought a feeder rod and adopted their approach.

A slightly stepped up feeder fishing outfit is all he used to catch the enormous fish.

It wasn’t long before he’d landed carp to 30lb on the new kit, but recently, he decided to push things further and head to Croatia, in search of a real monster.

Using a Method feeder, 0.22mm line and a size 6 Kamakura hook with a wafter and pop-up hookbait fished snowman-style, he was in for the trip of a lifetime.

“My first stop was Lake Triblaj in southern Croatia, set in a simply stunning location,” Attila told us.

“What was in store for me was beyond any expectation I may have had. Over an extremely windy four-day session, I landed 110 fish over 25lb, topped by a massive 65lb common. I was using two rods to begin with, but they were flying off the rest in double takes, so I ended up just using my 11ft Maver Abyss feeder rod.”

This 65lb common was caught on the same light tackle.

Next, Attila headed to Lake Zajarki - home to some of the largest carp in Croatia.

“I started fishing in promising-looking spots and bites came thick and fast,” he said.

“In four days, I landed 60 specimen-sized fish, including several over 60lb,”

After returning home, Attila knew another trip to Triblaj was in order. Although the fishing was slower than on his first visit, on the final morning of the trip, his efforts were rewarded.

“As I was watching the rod tips I only fished during the day, so I got myself a room in a local guest house,” he explained.

“On the last morning of the trip I was on the bank at first light, and after 15 minutes I had a screaming take, and as soon as I lifted the rod, knew it was a massive fish.”

An epic battle followed, but with some help from a fellow angler, a huge common lay in the net.

“Lifting it out of the water was a struggle but a sweet one – the scale stopped at a massive 72lb.”

Attila’s largest fish was caught on one of Shimano’s 14ft Aero X5 Distance rods. He filled his feeder with Sticky Krill 2.3mm pellets.

THREE TACKLE AND BAIT ITEMS THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE

Atilla's 72lb carp feeder rod

The Shimano Aero X5 14ft Distance Feeder Rod is, as the name suggests, designed to achieve maximum casting distances without any loss in fish playing action. The blanks are constructed from a high quality HPC XT60+ Nano carbon, which combined with a powerful lower section help to generate maximum tip speed.

The line just sails through the anti-tangle guides with very minimal friction, maximising your casting potential. The rod is capable of hitting distances unto 140m.

Pros

  • Superb casting rod.
  • Good action for landing big fish.

Cons

  • 14ft length can take some time to get used to.

Atilla's hook choice

The Korda Kamakura Hooks are without doubt, the sharpest hooks you will find. Every hook in the packet boasts the same super sharpness and the points are covered in a wax coating so they stay in the best possible condition until they are ready to be used.

They are available in Wide Gape, Krank and Kurve patterns in a range of sizes.

Pros

  • Ridiculously sharp.
  • Available in popular Korda patterns.

Cons

  • Can go blunt very quickly.

Atilla's Pellet Choice

Based on the same recipe as the award-winning Sticky Bloodworm Pellets, Sticky Krill Pellets have an active outer coating that consists of high levels of pure krill meal, while a bottom flavouring base layer produces a vibrant deep-orange haze. Great for PVA bags, groundbaits or in spod mixes, it can also be balled up with the addition of liquid for use around a Method feeder. Available in 2.3mm, 4mm and 6mm sizes.

A big-carp favourite in the trendy and highly effective krill flavouring, complementing The Krill range of boilies, wafters, pop-ups, liquids, glugs, sprays and groundbaits.

Pros

  • Very strong fishy smell.
  • Based on the same attractor package as one of the most infamous boilies of all-time.

Cons

  • No larger sizes than a 6mm.
