Lucky fishing hat helps bank huge grayling

Grayling are best known as a winter species, but Essex angler Daniel Bouskila proved that big ‘ladies of the stream’ can be caught in warmer weather too when he landed this 3lb 5oz stunner from a southern chalk stream.

Faced with a weedy and clear waterway, he targeted clear runs with nymphing tactics but, as lunchtime approached, he had only trout to show for his efforts. Daniel and his friend, Tom, were making their way back to the cars, ready for a cold pint at the pub, but couldn’t resist a few extra casts in a likely-looking spot as they did so.

Daniel focused on a run by a far-bank bush, and having run his fly through numerous times, had almost given up on his chance of a grayling when he was surprised to receive a powerful hit on the rod. The fish charged for the far bank, but by submerging the rod he managed to steer away from danger and into the landing net.
