Having lost a big fish the week before, Keith Woods set the record straight by catching one of the largest residents swimming in the iconic King’s Weir stretch of the River Lea in the shape of this 19lb 7oz barbel.
Targeting the weir pool, it was the early hours of the morning when Keith hooked the mighty fish, which smashed his PB by nearly 2lb. He used maggot feeder tactics, with 10 red grubs on a size 10 being his hookbait, and recast regularly to keep a trickle of feed going through the swim.
The barbel battled hard for around 20 minutes, making three runs in the strong current before Keith was able to safely land it. As an added bonus, he banked a 10lb 3oz bream earlier the same day, making it a truly memorable session.
