A low and clear River Trent made the first-ever Junior UK Barbel Masters a challenging affair and, despite no barbel being caught, the spirits of the competitors remained high.

Fishing at Collingham, more than 30 youngsters aged between six and 18 years old travelled to the venue with their families.

“The barbel didn’t play ball, but it seems everyone had a great day,” organiser Liam Willis told us.

“They fished hard, watching their rod-tips, recasting, and talking plans and strategy.”

Because no barbel were banked, competitors had to draw for prizes, but they each got something.

“Juniors are the future of our sport. Hopefully, we’ve encouraged them to spend time on the bank in search of barbel,” Liam added.
