It has been a brilliant week for big tench

Tench in venues across the nation have well and truly woken up, and the biggest of the season has been reported this week alongside a pile of other large fish.

The largest of these fell to 13-year-old Freddie Sadd, who landed a superb tinca weighing 12lb 1oz. He was fishing for both carp and tench on a southern water with his dad, Ross, using wafter hookbaits alongside PVA bags of pellets.

“I’d gone to MacDonald’s to get us breakfast when I had a call from Freddie, who told me he’d landed a massive tench,” Ross revealed.

“When I got back and saw it in the net, I was staggered by the size! Before catching it, we’d seen a large and dark fish roll a few times, getting closer to our spot every time. It must’ve been that fish!”

Finally, British barbel record holder James Crosby enjoyed a brilliant morning’s sport on aKent pit, landing no fewer than 16 tench, topped by one scaling 11lb 1oz.

“It was a hectic few hours,” he said.

“All the fish took feeder fished red maggots next to a gravel bar 35 yards out. Other highlights of the haul included fish of 9lb 1oz and 8lb 10oz.”
