A nine-year-old lad and his dad kicked off their spring stillwater campaigns in style, landing 38 bream – including 32 doubles – and 33 tench in one manic session!
Matt Rand is no stranger to big fish, and each spring he and his son, Freddie, venture out for a few days of tench and bream fishing. In the past, Matt had done the majority of the fishing, with Freddie simply happy to join him on the bank.
But last year Freddie did a bit himself, and he certainly took his angling to new heights on the recent trip to a southern stillwater.
THE BEST SPECIMEN RODS ARE PERFECT FOR CATCHING BIG FISH!

“I knew that the bream would push the tench out if they arrived in numbers, so we fished two of our three rods at range over a big bed of bait, hoping for bream,” Matt told Angling Times.
“The other was fished well out of the way, where we relied solely on the maggot feeder for attraction, tench being the target.”
Over two-and-a-half days of fishing the action was frantic, as the pair landed bream to 13lb and tench to 8lb… despite reeling in at night for some much-needed rest!
“We took it in turns on the rods, and by the end of the session we were both pretty fished out!” Matt revealed.
“Bites came so regularly that it was almost impossible to keep three rods out at once. Freddie constantly complained of aching arms, but he jumped at the rods every chance he got!”
They got through plenty of bait on their bream rods, introducing 15kg of particles, pellets, groundbait and small boilies. Maggot feeders with dendrobaena worm and maggot hookbaits produced all their fish.
“For a youngster, the tench and bream sessions are perfect, as there’s plenty of action and the tackle is manageable,” Matt added.
“I just need to make sure that he knows not every session is going to be quite so chaotic!”
