Could monster winter catfish be a new British record?

Just a month after the British Record Fish Committee reopened applications for Wels catfish, a moggie that’d smash the current best has been landed.

The 133lb beast was banked by Tomas Marcinkevicius and would obliterate the official 62lb record, caught from Withy Pool in 1997.

Tomas had the whopper from Willowcroft Fishery in Wisbech. While the species is generally associated with warmer months, he’s had a few great sessions already this winter.

“The weekend prior I visited Crow Green Fishery in Essex, where I landed a PB of 119lb plus 30 other cats,” he told us. “Ididn’tthinkI’dbeatthat, but little did I know...”

He arrived at Willowcroft with the plan to only stay for a few hours, but was soon into fish.

“When I hooked the big one, I don’t think it knew what was going on at first,” he added.

“But when it reached my bank, it charged off to the other side of the lake. I saw its tail slap the water’s surface and knew it was a bit special.”

The fish would be a contender for a new record, but Tomas isn’t bothered about that.

“It’d be nice, but I already know of larger UK cats that’ve been caught,” he said.

“I’m just happy with the fish, which I’ve named Tom Cat!”
