Specimen tench are still on the feed

Many tench anglers turned their attention to other species quite a few weeks ago, with the iconic late-spring fish, in most waters, being past peak condition now. But Peter Dobbs proved that there are still some cracking specimens to be caught in our larger, deeper waters when he landed this fish weighing exactly 11lb.

He’s been targeting a large southern gravel pit that’s best known for big carp, and was having a relatively quiet session on his latest visit, with a single six-pounder to show for his efforts. That all changed just as Peter was packing away the last of his gear, when one of his rods screamed off.

Convinced at first that it was a carp, he admitted that his heart was in his mouth when he realised he had finally hooked a big tench!

It was taken using a maggot feeder set-up, with two reds on the hook alongside a pair of hair-rigged artificial grubs.
