Just as John Merriman was packing up after an unsuccessful tench trip, he received a ripping take and, 45 minutes later, landed this 43lb 10oz mirror!
The trip was John’s first time targeting tench this year, due to having broken his ankle while grayling fishing in February.
Arriving at first light to find an easterly wind blowing, John wasn’t hopeful, but was just happy to be on the bank again.
“Due to the small rudd, I couldn’t fish maggots,” he said.
“So, I turned to a hair-rigged yellow wafter on a size 12 hook and 7lb hooklink. The tench failed to show, and I started to pack up when my left-hand rod screamed off! Knowing it was a carp, I took my time, and eventually a new UK PB graced the net!”
