Big Avon roach ‘a joy on the pin’

Mark Woodage is no stranger to catching big roach, having landed fish to 3lb 14oz in the past from various stillwaters.

But he’s recently been targeting the species on the Hampshire Avon, where he landed this 2lb 14oz specimen – his biggest from running water.

It topped a day when he caught numerous redfins, but this one was the largest by some measure. It fell to trotted maggots fished below a stick floaton light tackle.

In addition, Mark used a centrepin reel– an item of tackle that he says made the capture even more pleasing.
