I kicked off the test session with a small pellet waggler, cast as far as the blank could hurl it alongside the island. The Preston Dura Carp Pellet Waggler is a range of affordable, yet high-quality float rods designed to meet the demands of modern commercial fishing. With a choice between 10ft and 11ft models with different casting weights, these rods offer exceptional value and performance.
The blank was light, and soft enough to prevent the minimalist cast feeling too cumbersome and the little extra length wasn’t an issue either, and had very little effect on my accuracy.
On my second cast during testing, which clipped the overhanging grass, the rod whipped forward. Instinctively picking up and winding down, it bent right down to the reel seat as a very solid weight slowly thumped on the end, signalling a big carp! Although the fight got me excited and was great fun, in reality, I felt very much in control the whole time, and I netted near double figures of surprised carp on a slightly under-gunned 16 hook.
The rest of the morning followed the script. Regular good-sized carp between 4-8lb graced my net, giving the 10ft Dura Pellet Waggler an entirely different challenge. These bigger fish really test your tackle, especially against far bank snags, but the rod steered them away with minimal fuss.
Despite the bargain pricing of my weapon of choice, surprisingly few of them managed to get away. Although it’s possible to buy an adequate 10ft rod for less, is it really worth it when £10 to £15 more delivers so much extra in terms of performance? A £50 rod is never going to give you what a £200 rod will, but an extra few quid spent at the budget end makes a huge difference.

The Daiwa Matchman Pellet Waggler Rod rangeame excellent for beginners or those who don't want to spend a fortune on a rod. they also double up as a great conventional waggler rod or even for stick float fishing in the 13ft version, and for the cost, you get a lot of rod for the money!
As you would expect for a rod under £40, they aren't the stiffest, but while testing them out at at a standard commercial fishery, we loved the extra power they had for this style of fishing and it coped really well chucking a range of wagglers various distances. The rod is quite soft, so if you are fishing a water that has F1s as well as carp, you won't need to worry about them coming off due to hook pulls.
In fact, it was so much fun we forgot we were holding a rod that is essentially a budget/beginner entry rod, and you have the option to choose between 10ft, 11ft, 12ft or 13ft, appealing to everyone and most venues.
The rods length assists in casting lighter wagglers to a comfortable range past the pole line and beyond, and it does double up as a carp float rod too if the day calls for it. The construction gives a good balance between power and sensitivity, maintaining good line pick up to assist in hitting fast bites on waters where the carp are a little wary of the waggler.

Glossary
Pellet waggler: A pellet waggler is a small, dumpy float used for fishing. It is suited for any small particle baits but can also be used for larger baits such as cut cubes of meat. Its main use is to present a bait near the surface of the water, usually in the top 60cm.
Blank: The hollow carbon fibre tube that the rod is made from, attached to which are the guides and handle.
Guides: The rings that line the length of the rod that the line passes through.
Casting weight: Depending on the manufacturer, it is either the best suited or maximum total weight in grams that you should cast with your rod. You will normally find your rod will perform best at around half its total casting weight. For example, a 15g casting rod best suits an 8-10g float.
Fish playing action: A way of describing how good a rod performs when reeling in a fish. A rod with a good fish-playing action will provide plenty of cushion to a thrashing fish, preventing hookpulls (lost fish) and line breakages.
Progressive action. A rod that quickly powers up from its tip through to its middle area, providing the ideal coordinated playing action for powerful fish.
Through action: A rod that has a softer top section but still produces a cushioned bend throughout its entire length, giving a good fish-playing action.

What is the difference between a pellet waggler rod and a standard float rod?
Often shorter in length at 11ft or less with a little more power, pellet waggler rods are suited to busy fishing and frequent casting when fishing up in the water for carp with heavier floats and lines. Commonly 13ft is the most popular length with a float rod, which gives you greater control over lighter floats and a softer action for smaller hooks, baits and species.
Can I use a normal waggler rod for pellet waggler fishing?
Whilst you can use a normal float rod for pellet waggler fishing, it won't be nearly as effective as a rod designed for the job. Normal waggler rods are built for finesse and don't really have the power to cast the larger floats repeatedly. They will also struggle to strike through the float, resulting in a lot of missed bites. The longer length also makes them a little cumbersome for the active nature of pellet waggler fishing, with the size of the fish and the stepped up tackle, rod breakages can be common.
What is the best length rod for pellet waggler fishing?
Rod length can dictate the distance you can cast and your ability to play a fish. The shorter the rod, the easier it is to land fish, so if you are catching a lot of fish, then a 10ft can really excel in landing them faster, with the fish surfacing much closer to netting range.
A smaller commercial or one where you're casting upto islands lends itself to a 10ft rod too. If you need a rod for a few venues and want a more versatile option, then choose an 11ft version, they will cast further than a 10ft in most circumstances and generally have a bit more power to allow you to use a range of floats.
