Weeks of blanking pay off with massive eel

Although once prolific, eel numbers have been steadily declining due to various factors, and a big eel is now one of the rarer fish you can target in the UK. However hard the target, it isn't impossible and if you dedicate some time you, have the chance of catching one of these illusive specimens. Jamie Guthrie is one such angler, and after managing to find a water that contained some eels he set his sights on trying to bank one.

“Recently I decided to spend a bit of time targeting eels, having seen lots of big ones over the past few weeks in a stillwater.

“After a number of sessions, my efforts finally came to fruition when I landed this fish of 5lb 4oz. It fell to a small trout head, which I lip-hooked after sourcing it from a local trout farm.

“This was presented on a twig rig, which I fished on a free-running set-up.”
