Few anglers got their river season off to a better start than Norfolk’s Stephen Gibbons who, on the morning of June 16, landed this sublime 3lb 8oz rudd.
Targeting a Fenland river, Stephen opted for boilie tactics and fished a 12mm Nash Scopex Squid pop-up about four inches off-bottom over a bed of matching bottom baits. He’s found that outside the dawn and dusk feeding windows, in which more typical bread tactics produce, boilies are incredibly effective for tempting big rudd, and in good numbers too.
He had the take at 3am, when the powerful fish surged for heavy weed. But Stephen’s tackle and nerves held firm as he steered the specimen towards the net.
