Trust demand immediate pollution policies after 'extremely high' phosphate levels found on the River Severn

Following damning test results on one of the UK’s premier fishing rivers, the Angling Trust has called for the English and Welsh Governments to deliver pollution-tackling policies immediately.

Volunteers of Water Quality Monitoring Network (WQMN) – a drive where anglers conduct nutrient tests in local rivers – found that, on the Severn, phosphate levels are extremely high. This is unsurprising, given that the river suffered an appalling 33,667 sewage discharges over the last two years.

“We need the English and Welsh Governments to establish fully-funded policies to address pollution in our waterways that deliver improvements now, not in the distant future,” said Kris Kent, WQMN leader, in the light of the data.

“The government must meet its commitment to reinvest fines handed out to polluters into environmental enhancements. Only then will we see the improvements our rivers and the environment so badly need.”

THE RIVER SEVERN IS STILL A FANTASTIC FISHING RIVER AND WE NEED TO FIGHT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. SUPPORT THESE GREAT PLACES TO STAY AND FISH.
