Big eels are rare in the UK, and unfortunately they seem to be decreasing with every year that goes by, so it is always great to see a big fish caught. On their latest trip, Gethin Hillier and his grandad Carl Golding were fishing a carp lake they knew held some good-sized eels, but they weren't prepared for the fish that ended up taking Gethin's bait.

“My 14-year-old grandson, Gethin, took this 5lb 2oz eel from a carp lake in South Wales the other day.

“He caught it by design, fishing a dendrobaena worm hookbait alongside a maggot feeder, and had a great tussle with it.

“He had a massive grin on his face all day after catching this fish. I, on the other hand, blanked!”
