With many rivers being flooded across England, Simon Ashton headed to Scotland to find fishable water and was rewarded with this 3lb 6oz personal best grayling.
With snow and sub-zero temperatures forecast, he was the only angler on the stretch, where his plan was to trot maggots. After landing a few fish around the 2lb mark from his first swim, Simon decided to try a shallower run.
After landing another ‘two’, he then saw a large fish roll upstream and quickly moved onto it. He had been loosefeeding maggots sparingly in the other swims he fished, but in this instance, he simply ran a trio of white maggots through, boosted with Betalin Liquid Gold spray.
Within 10 seconds the tip of his 6g Drennan Titanium Trotter float shot under, and Simon connected with a fish that produced such a strong first run he wondered if it was a sea trout.
Eventually, he guided it into some slack water where he got a glimpse of a huge grayling just beneath the surface. Once safely in the landing net, he could see it was the giant he was after, and just reward for his efforts in getting to the river.
