Season's highlight is big Hampshire Avon roach right at the death

AFTER a ‘scary’ drive through the New Forest to the Hampshire Avon in strong winds, Pete Wilson was rewarded for his efforts with this 2lb 10oz roach.

Usually, he’d have fished the float, but due to the wind that wasn’t a viable option, so he rigged up a maggot feeder instead.

Using a 0.14mm hooklink and size 14 hook, he caught a dozen roach before losing a big fish to a pike. He retackled and targeted a different area of the swim, away from the pike, and around 30  minutes later his tip flew round again.

A great scrap followed before he landed the new PB redfin, which was understandably the highlight of his season.

Fancy catching one yourself next season? Here's some great venues and tips to help you do it.
