Quality Trent zander caught on challenging big tide

On a trip to a stretch of the tidal River Trent Darren Maloney managed to catch this long and lean 15lb 12oz zander in what proved to be pretty challenging conditions.

A big tide was tearing through, filling the river with colour and leaving it only just fishable. But Darren stuck it out, using popped-up deadbait to avoid the river's invasive mitten crabs.

When he received a drop-back bite, Darren hit into what he knew immediately was a good fish, as he struggled to lift it off the bottom.

After a good battle during which the zander made a few heavy lunges near the net, he slipped the mesh under what he believes is one of the best fish he's ever caught.
